Catching up with The ScareCrows

Live Bands Cornwall met up with the ‘Crows at Helstonbury and asked them a few questions. Unfortunately drummer George had gone awol so it was only 3/4 of the band…

How long has the band been together?
Nick: The current line up has only been together a few weeks but the band has existed with different line ups for about 4 or 5 years.

You have got a new bass player? How’s that going?
Claire (aka ‘Dreaded Jones’):  It’s great, I’m loving it 🙂
Riff: The first gig was at The Old Ale House (June 19th) which was a bit like being thrown in at the deep end but it was a great gig and we’ve done quite a few more since then.

What are your biggest influences?
Riff: Well we play covers of The Stones, the Velvet Underground, The Byrds, The Kinks and other classic bands from the 60’s & 70’s but we’ve also been influenced by artists like The Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow and Steve Earl.

You mentioned a few crows there, did that influence the name “ScareCrows”?
Nick: Er no, we’re not actually sure how we came up with the name. It was probably the first Bass player ‘Dr Fussell’ came up with it and we all just said “That’ll do”. There’s no specific meaning.

You cover some great songs but you also have some original material in the set – can you tell us a bit about your writing process? How do you get started?
Nick: Haha, well Riff usually nicks all my ideas! 😀
Riff: Usually I come up with a riff while I’m sitting at home relaxing. Then I might video it and post it to Nick to put lyrics to it…. but then he ignores it 😀

So you are the lyricist Nick?
Yes, I write music as well but Riff can’t do lyrics and I find that I just can… although I have got better at it as I’ve got older. In the last 10 years or so I’d say I’ve improved a lot and its got easier…. and then of course when we come together and play it in rehearsals the rest of the band have quite a bit of input, helping with developing it further, trying different arrangements until we are happy with it.

So you are playing Helstonbury today, but what’s next for the band? How would you like to see things developing in the coming months or years?
Nick: We’d like to do more original songs. We’ve got some good material sitting around waiting for us to do something with it, we just need to fine tune it….
Riff: Yes, and more americana! I think we’d like to move away from general rock to something more altantic… we also want to develop a wordpress website and make more use of soundcloud etc…

OK final question and its a hard one – which local band or bands would you recommend our followers go out and see (apart from yourselves of course)…?
Riff: The Flaming Infidels
Claire: The Stalks
Nick: Three Minute Warning
