Gig Review – Circus Party

Old Bakery Studios, Truro 11/11/17
Another outstanding night at the Old Bakery, Truro! There was music from two great bands, stilt walkers and acrobats, hoop spinning and tumbles (not all intentional) and even impromtu dancing from  Nos Lowen…

OK, so I hadn’t intended to write a review of this gig, given that I’ve reviewed 3 Daft Monkeys and the Old Bakery Studios recently. The evening was just too good not to give it a mention however…

Black Eyed Nancy

Kicking the night off were Black Eyed Nancy a fairly new 4 piece band from Illogan who performed an uplifting mix of original songs, along with some more traditional Cornish pieces which they’d re-arranged or re-written to add their own stamp. Members of Nos Lowen in the audience took up the challenge and provided some traditional Cornish social dancing to two of these tunes and the rest of the audience were charmed by the lilting melodies and the zesty rhythmic backing and rich harmonies.

Vagabond Circus

Entertainment before the gig and between acts was provided by members of Vagabond Circus who sprang onto the floor and made everyone ooh and aah with their amazing circus skills. There were balancing acts and tumblers, a stilt walker and a contortionist, and this talented girl who wowed us with her hoop spinning abilities. (The contortionist also plays the fiddle and popped up on stage later on to join 3 Daft Monkeys on a number of songs.)

3 Daft Monkeys

And then finally the 3 Daft Monkeys did their wonderful, crazy thing and got the room gently swaying, then waltzing, then jigging along like maniacs as they always do. They played all the favourites and provided the 200% quality entertainment that is their trademark. Here’s a short clip of “World On Its Head” with some legs from Vagabond Circus:

All in all, another highly unusual, and absolutely fantastic night from the Old Bakery Studios. Thank you to the organisers, the sound and light people, the bar staff and to Punk Thai for the food. We are very lucky to have this venue, and here’s to many more fabulous events in the coming months / years.
